Conjugation of "To Be" in the Past Tense

• I was ➡ أنَا كُنْتُ (Ana kuntu)
• We were ➡ نَحْنُ كُنَّا (Nahnu kunna)
• You were (masc) ➡ أَنْتَ كُنْتَ (Anta kunta)
• You were (fem) ➡ أَنْتِ كُنْتِ (Anti kunti)
• You were (dual) ➡ أَنْتُمَا كُنْتُمَا (Antumaa kuntumaa)
• You were (plural masc) ➡ أَنْتُمْ كُنْتُمْ (Antum kuntum)
• You were (plural fem) ➡ أَنْتُنَّ كُنتُنَّ (Antunna kuntunna)
• He was ➡ هُوَ كَانَ (Huwa kana)
• She was ➡ هِيَ كَانَتْ (Hiya kanat)
• They were (dual masc) ➡ هُمَا كَانَا (Humaa kanaa)
• They were (dual fem) ➡ هُمَا كَانَتَا (Humaa kanataa)
• They were (plural masc) ➡ هُمْ كَانُوا (Hum kaanu)
• They were (plural fem) ➡ هُنَّ كُنَّ (Hunna kunna)

Examples

• I was in the library.
أَنَا كُنْتُ فِي الْمَكْتَبَةِ. (Ana kuntu fi al-maktabah.)

• We were at a meeting.
نَحْنُ كُنَّا فِي اجْتِمَاعٍ. (Nahnu kunna fi ijtima‘.)

• You were in the office.
أَنْتَ كُنْتَ فِي الْمَكْتَبِ. (Anta kunta fi al-maktab.)

• You were in the kitchen.
أَنْتِ كُنْتِ فِي الْمَطْبَخِ. (Anti kunti fi al-matbakh.)

• You both were here.
أَنْتُمَا كُنْتُمَا هُنَا. (Antumaa kuntumaa huna.)

• They were workers.
هُمَا كَانَا عَامِلَيْنِ. (Humaa kanaa ‘amilayni.)

• They were in the hospital.
هُنَّ كُنَّ فِي الْمُسْتَشْفَى. (Hunna kunna fi al-mustashfa.)
