Conjugation of "To Be" in the Past Tense

  • I wasأنَا كُنْتُ (Ana kuntu)
  • We wereنَحْنُ كُنَّا (Nahnu kunna)
  • You were (masc)أَنْتَ كُنْتَ (Anta kunta)
  • You were (fem)أَنْتِ كُنْتِ (Anti kunti)
  • You were (dual)أَنْتُمَا كُنْتُمَا (Antumaa kuntumaa)
  • You were (plural masc)أَنْتُمْ كُنْتُمْ (Antum kuntum)
  • You were (plural fem)أَنْتُنَّ كُنتُنَّ (Antunna kuntunna)
  • He wasهُوَ كَانَ (Huwa kana)
  • She wasهِيَ كَانَتْ (Hiya kanat)
  • They were (dual masc)هُمَا كَانَا (Humaa kanaa)
  • They were (dual fem)هُمَا كَانَتَا (Humaa kanataa)
  • They were (plural masc)هُمْ كَانُوا (Hum kaanu)
  • They were (plural fem)هُنَّ كُنَّ (Hunna kunna)

Examples

I was in the library.
أَنَا كُنْتُ فِي الْمَكْتَبَةِ. (Ana kuntu fi al-maktabah.)
We were at a meeting.
نَحْنُ كُنَّا فِي اجْتِمَاعٍ. (Nahnu kunna fi ijtima‘.)
You were in the office.
أَنْتَ كُنْتَ فِي الْمَكْتَبِ. (Anta kunta fi al-maktab.)
You were in the kitchen.
أَنْتِ كُنْتِ فِي الْمَطْبَخِ. (Anti kunti fi al-matbakh.)
You both were here.
أَنْتُمَا كُنْتُمَا هُنَا. (Antumaa kuntumaa huna.)
They were workers.
هُمَا كَانَا عَامِلَيْنِ. (Humaa kanaa ‘amilayni.)
They were in the hospital.
هُنَّ كُنَّ فِي الْمُسْتَشْفَى. (Hunna kunna fi al-mustashfa.)
